Abbey's Weekly Estate 'Red' No.2736

Live Fri 28 Aug, 10am / Burwood

📍 80-86 Highbury Road, Burwood VIC 3125

757 uncurated estate and household lots and the deepest flip pool of the week, with furniture leading the catalogue: a Jati Fine Loom six-piece wicker lounge suite at $500 to $800, a mid-century teak coffee table at $100 to $200, and a pair of octagonal timber side tables at $50 to $100. The viewing day is Thursday 27 August, 9am to 5pm, and it covers the Rugs sale too, so one trip to Burwood inspects both catalogues. As-is, 24% buyer's premium, and 757 lots clear in one session, so shortlist on the Thursday rather than browsing on sale day.

Abbey's Rugs No.2718

Estate auction · Live Thu 27 Aug, 7pm · Burwood

95 lots of rugs, and unusually forgiving stock: they clean and repair well and carry none of the structural risk that catches people out on timber and upholstery. Lot 1 is a vintage Persian Kashan hand-knotted wool rug at $600 to $700 and lot 2 a vintage Persian Hamadan at $300 to $400. Same Thursday viewing window as the Estate room, then it sells that evening.

Nine are still at $35 or under. Third Thursday running that this operator has cleared a metro batch, so pick one corridor and run two or three on a single collection route. As-is, 17.5% premium, clear within 72 hours, $200 refundable bond.

The StoreLocal $1 morning

Storage locker · 7 units close Wed 26 Aug, from 8am · Melbourne metro

Five StoreLocal units close at 8am and three of them are still at a dollar: Hallam, Campbellfield and Northcote, with two Narre Warren units at $11. Then Ezebox West Footscray puts up two more at 1pm, both also at $1. This is the cheapest entry point on the board all week, so open each unit page for photos and treat the clearance cost, not the bid, as the real price.

Crichton Removals unit, Mount Duneed

Storage locker · Closes Sat 29 Aug, 12pm · Mount Duneed

Still at $10 and the best-shaped single unit of the week. Removalist units hold whole-household moves rather than the long-tail clutter that fills self-storage, so the odds on furniture volume are materially better than a self-storage unit at the same price. Mount Duneed is on the Geelong run, so pair it with something else if you are making the drive.

Roomia Sunshine North goes at midday for $10. Four sites inside the north-west corridor on one night, which is the only configuration where winning several is actually clearable in the 72 hours.

Monash annual hard waste, final zone date

Council · Final zone date Mon 31 Aug · Monash LGA

Free, kerbside, completely uncurated, and the last publishable street-level date of the whole annual round. Monash moves to booked at-call collection in 2027, so there is no equivalent window next year and this is the end of the channel. Yield concentrates in detached-housing streets across Clayton, Oakleigh, Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley, Mulgrave and Wheelers Hill. Enter an address on the date finder to confirm the zone, then walk it the evening before, because everything has to be kerbside by 6am.

Strathmore Heights downsizing sale

Free & cheap · Sat 29 Aug, 8am to 6pm · Strathmore Heights

The strongest walk-through of the week: full street address published, a ten-hour window nobody else offers, and a downsizing three-bedroom house whose owner was young in the 1970s, so the retro claim is credible rather than decorative. Named in the listing: a large desk in excellent condition, office chair, two filing cabinets, banana lounges, oil heater, wall mirrors, framed prints, a large collection of garden pots and a possibly Turkish carpet. Cash, no buyer's premium, and you inspect everything before you pay.

Glenroy clearance, everything must go

Free & cheap · Sat 29 Aug, 8am to 4pm · Glenroy

Moving house, no reasonable offer refused, covering indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, crystal, silver and kitchen items. It has now been live a fortnight without clearing, and a seller with that much exposure and no result will take an offer. Glenroy and Strathmore Heights are about 4km apart and both open at 8am, so one north-west run covers both.

Altona North aged-care clearance

Free & cheap · Sun 30 Aug, 8am to 3pm · Altona North

Moving into aged care, everything must go, no reasonable offer refused: kitchen table, fridge, washer and dryer, indoor furniture, kitchenware, bric-a-brac and tools. Aged-care clearances are the best-shaped garage sale there is, because the seller has a hard move-out date and no interest in holding stock. The listing is explicit about not arriving early.

Breen VicPol forfeited and unclaimed sale

Police · Live Thu 3 Sep, 10am · West Footscray

258 lots with one in-scope pocket: generators, chainsaws and DeWalt, Husqvarna, Makita, Milwaukee and Ryobi hand and power tools. No furniture and no homewares this round. Be honest about the ratio before you go, because a $250 cash registration, mandatory in-person attendance and a 22% premium is a lot of friction for one narrow category. Viewing is the morning of the sale only, 8am to 9.50am, and registration is refunded if you buy nothing.

iBidOnStorage Victoria units

Storage locker · New units weekly · Melbourne metro

75 live Victorian units this week, up from 54 last week and the deepest board we have tracked. StoreLocal has become the reliable source of sub-$5 opening bids and they cluster at 8am, so that is the slot to watch. Soft close, 17.5% premium, clear within 72 hours, $200 refundable bond, and the clearance cost is the line most people underestimate.

Gumtree deceased-estate feed

Free & cheap · Refreshed daily · Melbourne

A daily habit rather than a drive. Sort newest across furniture, homewares, lighting and outdoor, and always check the seller's other ads, because one listing often hides a whole-house clearance behind it. Gumtree publishes full addresses where Garage Sale Finder withholds the street number, so it is the better source for route planning.

The lowdown

The Sourcing Watch is a weekly roundup of the best secondhand furniture around Melbourne. Estate auctions, storage lockers, deceased estate clearances, free finds. We dig through all of it and write up the lots actually worth your time, so you can spend it restoring and reselling instead of trawling listings.

Who is The Sourcing Watch for?+

Restorers, upcyclers, resellers and flippers. Anyone who turns cheap secondhand furniture into something better. We do the digging across Melbourne so you can spend your time on the restore and the resale, not the hunt.

Where can I buy cheap furniture to restore or flip in Melbourne?+

Every week we round up estate auctions, deceased estate clearances, storage locker auctions, council hard rubbish and free listings across Melbourne and Victoria, then write up the lots actually worth the drive.

What is an estate auction or a storage unit auction?+

Estate auctions clear out a whole home, usually solid timber furniture, mirrors and homewares, sold as-is to the highest bidder. Storage locker auctions sell the contents of unpaid units as one job lot, sight unseen. Higher risk, higher upside.

How often is it updated?+

Every Monday. One short email with the week's best finds, plus this page for the full list, the map and the calendar.

Is it free?+

Yes. Subscribe and the week's finds land in your inbox. No fees, no catch.
